The Paris 2024 Olympics have sparked a renewed debate over gender eligibility in sports, focusing on the controversial participation of Algeria’s Imane Khelif and Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting in Olympic boxing. Both athletes, previously disqualified from last year’s World Championships due to gender eligibility issues, are now competing in the prestigious event.

Imane Khelif, 25, recently advanced to the quarter-finals in the women’s 66kg category after a brief match against Italy’s Angela Carini. The fight ended abruptly after just 46 seconds when Carini chose to withdraw, citing concerns for her safety. Lin Yu-ting similarly progressed to the last eight in the women’s 57kg category.

The International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) decision to allow their participation has intensified the debate, drawing criticism from various quarters. The International Boxing Association (IBA), the former governing body for Olympic boxing, has been particularly vocal in its opposition to the IOC’s decision.

High-profile personalities have also joined the conversation. Author J.K. Rowling expressed her concerns on social media, accusing the sports establishment of misogyny. Elon Musk, owner of X (formerly Twitter), endorsed a post asserting that “men don’t belong in women’s sports.”

“Could any picture sum up our new men’s rights movement better? The smirk of a male who knows he’s protected by a misogynist sporting establishment, enjoying the distress of a woman he’s just punched in the head and whose life’s ambition he’s just shattered,” Rowling tweeted.

In response to the backlash, the IOC has stood by its decision, stating, “Everyone competing in the women’s category is complying with the competition eligibility rules. They are women in their passports, and it is stated that they are female.”

Khelif, who is biologically female, addressed the issue following her victory, saying, “I’m here for the gold – I fight everybody.” She is set to face Hungary’s Anna Luca Hamori in her next match.

Angela Carini, who ended the fight in tears, later apologized to Khelif and refrained from criticizing her inclusion in the women’s competition. She told the press, “I wish her to carry on until the end and that she can be happy. I am someone who doesn’t judge anyone.”

This ongoing debate over gender eligibility in sports underscores the complex challenges faced by international sporting bodies in their efforts to ensure fair and inclusive competitions. As the Paris 2024 Olympics continue, the participation of Khelif and Lin remains a hotly contested issue, raising important questions about fairness, inclusion, and the evolving understanding of gender in sports.
